How to Wrap a Mattress for Moving

A mattress is one of the largest and most important items you’ll move when changing homes. It’s also one of the easiest to damage if it isn’t protected properly. Dust, dirt, moisture, and tears can all affect the comfort and hygiene of your mattress during transport. Learning how to wrap a mattress correctly helps keep it clean, dry, and in good condition from your old home to your new one.

The good news is that you don’t need specialist skills — just the right materials and a bit of care.

Why Wrapping a Mattress Matters

Mattresses are made of layers of foam, springs, and fabric that can easily absorb dirt and moisture. During a move, they may be carried through doorways, placed on the ground, or loaded into a van with other furniture. Without protection, the outer fabric can rip, stain, or collect dust.

Even a small tear can let dirt or moisture get inside, which may lead to odours or damage over time. Proper wrapping acts as a barrier, keeping your mattress hygienic and helping it arrive at your new home in the same condition it left.

Start by Cleaning and Preparing the Mattress

Before wrapping your mattress, remove all bedding including sheets, mattress protectors, and toppers. Give the surface a quick clean by vacuuming it with an upholstery attachment. This removes dust, hair, and small debris so they don’t get trapped inside the wrapping.

Make sure the mattress is completely dry before you cover it. If there are any damp areas from cleaning or spills, let them air dry fully. Wrapping a damp mattress can trap moisture and lead to mould or unpleasant smells.

Use a Proper Mattress Bag or Heavy-Duty Plastic

The best way to wrap a mattress is with a mattress storage bag. These are large plastic covers designed specifically to fit mattresses of different sizes. They are affordable, easy to find online or in moving supply stores, and offer strong protection against dirt and moisture.

Slide the mattress into the bag while it’s standing upright or lying flat. It may be easier with two people — one holding the bag open while the other guides the mattress inside. Once it’s fully covered, fold any excess plastic over the open end and seal it securely with strong packing tape.

If you can’t get a mattress bag, you can use heavy-duty plastic sheeting or furniture wrap. Wrap the mattress tightly from one end to the other, making sure all sides are covered. Overlap the plastic and seal the seams well with tape so it doesn’t come loose during the move.

Avoid using thin household bin bags or lightweight plastic, as they can tear easily.

Add Extra Protection for Long Moves

If your mattress will be in storage or transported over a long distance, consider adding an extra layer of protection. Moving blankets or old thick blankets wrapped around the plastic-covered mattress help protect it from knocks and pressure during loading.

Secure the blankets with tape or straps, but avoid taping directly onto the mattress fabric. Always tape over the protective plastic layer instead.

This extra padding is especially helpful if the mattress will be placed next to heavy furniture or stacked in a removal van.

Keep the Mattress Flat and Supported

During the move, try to keep the mattress flat if possible. This helps it maintain its shape, especially for memory foam or hybrid mattresses. If it must be transported on its side, make sure it’s fully supported and not bent sharply.

Avoid placing heavy items on top of the mattress in the van, as this can cause dents or internal damage. Professional movers usually stand mattresses upright along the side walls of the vehicle and secure them with straps to prevent shifting.

Be Careful When Carrying It

Mattresses can be awkward to carry because of their size and flexibility. Always lift with two people if possible. Hold it from the sides rather than dragging it across floors or pavement, which can tear the wrapping and damage the mattress underneath.

Take care when moving through doorways and tight spaces. Slow, controlled movements reduce the risk of scraping walls or ripping the protective cover.

Unwrap It Properly at Your New Home

Once you arrive at your new home, bring the mattress inside before removing the plastic covering. This prevents it from picking up dirt from outside surfaces.

Carefully cut the tape and plastic with scissors, making sure not to slice into the mattress fabric. Let the mattress air out for a few hours before putting bedding back on, especially if it has been wrapped for more than a day.

This airing time helps release any trapped smells and allows the mattress to return to its normal shape if it was compressed slightly during the move.

Final Thoughts

Wrapping a mattress for moving is a simple but important step that protects one of the most valuable and frequently used items in your home. With a proper mattress bag, secure sealing, and careful handling, you can prevent dirt, moisture, and damage during transport.

A little preparation goes a long way. By taking the time to wrap your mattress correctly, you’ll be able to set it up in your new home clean, fresh, and ready for a good night’s sleep.
